#BlackInImmuno 3 Minute Flash Talks
Black in Immuno is hosting a 3 minute flash talk competition for Black in Immuno Week 2023!
Black identifying undergraduate students, Master’s students, Graduate students, and Postdocs are invited to participate by recording a video summarizing their immunology-focused scientific research in a compelling way to a non-specialist audience in 3 minutes or less.
Videos will be judged based on comprehension, content, communication and engagement by an esteemed panel of judges.
Rewards will be given for First place ($300) and Second place ($200). There will also be a community choice winner ($100) who will be chosen by community votes via the poll below!

Judging Guidelines:
Comprehension and Content:
Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed, while explaining terminology and avoiding jargon?
Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and/or results of the research and leave the audience with a key set of takeaways?
Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?
Were the thesis topic, research significance, results/impact, and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation? Did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?
Engagement and Communication:
Did the speaker have an engaging and confident delivery style?
Did the presenter capture and maintain the audience’s attention?
Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?
Did the PowerPoint slide enhance and support the presentation—was it clear how the slide supported and related to the verbal presentation?
Did the presentation spark the curiosity and imagination of the audience?
Did the presenter organize their time effectively to finish within three minutes?
Guidelines for recording your talk:
We recommend using Powerpoint or Zoom to record your talk.
Zoom: record using Zoom’s screen share and recording features. You create a meeting for yourself and then screen share the Powerpoint presentation. Make sure the "show Zoom screens during screen share" button is checked in the Zoom preferences.
Powerpoint: This will allow you to easily use presenter view if you’d like have your slide notes available during recording. Use the “Record Slide Show” feature (tutorial here). You can record slide by slide, and re-do individual slides to your liking.
Windows: use your mouse to point to figures you’re talking about—this helps the viewer follow along.
Macs: Newer versions will record your laser pointer. If you’re using older versions, consider using animated arrows/boxes to highlight data you’re talking about.
Afterwards, please create an MP4 video file from Powerpoint by clicking File > Export > MP4 as the file name. Watch the MP4 video to be sure the timings/animations and recordings are to your liking prior to sending us the video file.
